An eight-year-old girl from Uttar Pradesh became the youngest divorcee in the world after she divorced her 14-year-old husband of four years.
Fatima Mangre, who was staying with her parents post wedding, got married to Arjun Bakridi at the tender age of four.
Years later when the young groom came knocking at her father's door wanting to take her back, her father Anil put his foot down in protest and said that she would only leave her parents home once she turned 18.
This didn't go down well with Arjun's father Dipak Bakridi and an altercation ensued. At the end of it, the bride's father decided to annul the marriage. The annulment was done last week.
Soon after the news of this young separation reached NCW member Nirmala Samant's ears, she asked the state government to probe the case and find out how they allowed a young girl of four to get married.
She said: 'This is a scandal, we need more details before taking action. The girl's father must answer why he married her off at four years old and the boy's father must answer why he agreed to such a marriage and then went to demand the girl when she is barely eight years old. This is insensitive, controversial and objectionable.'
The girl's father has pleaded for pardon while the groom's dad is fleeing.
