As part of undertaking poll reforms, the Central Election Commission has come up with new proposals to the central government suggesting that the existing ceiling limit on the candidate’s pre poll expenditure be revised from the present Rs.25 lakhs to Rs.40 lakhs, and Rs.10 lakhs to Rs.16 lakhs covering the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections respectively.
Further, the CEC informed that the Central Election Commission intends to do away with the present practice of issuing ‘Door slip’ to voters on the polling day.
Speaking in a national convention, convened by the IIT Chennai on ‘Elections-changes in political dimensions’ yesterday, the CEC SY Qureshi observed that it has become inevitable to raise the pre poll expenditure considering the heightened inflation. There should not be any difficulty in getting the clearance from the Law Ministry in regard to the same, said the CEC.
Also, the CEC expressed the confidence that the new measure will help in checking the influence of money power.
Patting the State Election Commission, Qureshi said that Tamil Nadu is way ahead of other states in the country with regard to issuing of EPIC cards to voters.
