PIL seeking ban on plastic bags - Court notice to Center

Acting on a plea seeking total ban of plastic bag usage, the Supreme Court has issued notices to the Central and State governments directing the ban of plastic bags in the country.

The Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed by an NGO stating that the plastic bags on roads were being eaten by animals, which was potentially dangerous to them.  The court accepted the PIL stating that it has raised an important issue. It's known tat even drainage system is being disturbed due to choking caused by plastic bags.

The petitioners said: "Due to government neglect across the country and her maritime boundaries or coastline, animals particularly cows and bulls, are ingesting plastic from garbage dumps and plastic bags littered across the landscape and oceans. The ingestion of plastic from plastic bags chokes the stomach of cows."

Already plastic bag ban is effective in many parts of the country including Nilgiris and Hyderabad. Now that the apex court ordered ban all over the world, people will no more see the dirty plastic bags on the roads. There is however a question whether use of plastic disposable glasses will also be banned. (Phani)
