The voting in the by poll to the Banswada assembly constituency in Nizamabad district has ended peacefully this evening amid unprecedented security. Polling officials said more than 65 percent of the voters polled their votes to elect their representative in the assembly.
The by poll was necessitated as TDP MLA Mr Pocharam Srinivasa reddy quit both the party and assembly and joined the TRS, the main political party spearheading the Telangana agitation.
While the congress has put up Mr Srinivasa Goud as its candidate for the by poll, the TDP kept off the by election saying that no party should contest it for the sake of Telangana. The polling began at 186 polling booths in 117 polling centers at 8 am and ended at 5 pm across the constituency.
The by poll has gained significance as the polling officials arranged live web cameras at all polling stations for live telecast of the polling process which has taken place amid heavy police security.
