GSLV-D5 Successfully Launched

Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) - D5 built by Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) was successfully launched from Sriharikota at 4.18 pm today from Satish Dhawan Space Center.

The Rocket with a tail of 49.13 meters and weighing 414.75 tonnes carried GSAT-14 weighing 1982 Kg.   The mission’s cost is Rs. 365 crore.

Previously the communication satellites were launched with the help of European space agency.  Now with the rocket made with the technique of cryogenic engine, India saved a lot of foreign exchange for hiring the launching vehicles from other countries.  The cost of GSLV is Rs.220 crore where as India was spending previously Rs.500 crore in foreign exchange for hiring launch vehicles.

As the communication satellites are placed in the orbit at a distance of 36000 km and it moves in synchrony with the earth movement, those satellites are called geo stationary and it makes antennas on the earth simpler without any efforts to locate the satellite.

Now with GSLV the foreign dependency to launch satellites in the orbit of earth has been reduced.
