Thoothukudi Protests Intensifies: Govt Suspends Internet Services:- Over 12 people lost their lives and 65 people have been injured in Thoothukudi (Tuticorin) protests against Sterlite's industrial plant which has been polluting the city. Though 144 section has been imposed, the locals continued to agitate against Sterlite Copper. The Madurai bench of Madras High Court stayed the expansion of Vedanta's Sterlite Copper yesterday which has been a relief. A public consultation has been asked to be sought before expansion said the court.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edapaddi K Palaniswami ordered a judicial enquiry and he announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakhs for the families of the deceased. Tamil Nadu Government ordered suspension of internet in the districts of Kanyakumari, Thoothukudi and Tirunelveli to prevent rumours about the violence in Thoothukudi. The people are just protesting because the sterlite is polluting and they feel that Supreme Court along with Tamil Nadu Government and the Pollution Control Board betrayed them.
