A guy threw the basketball from the top of the dam with a slight spin. Initially, it started rolling down as usual, but, when it is nearing to touch the ground, it started swooping and soaring like a bird.

Even the guy, who threw it was shocked to see this and said that is due to the Magnus effect.
How does the Magnus effect apply for the ball thrown?
The ball goes on picking up the speed while rolling down, and due to this, air on the front side of the ball will go in the same direction as its spin and thus gets dragged along with the ball and deflected back.

"Air on the other side of the ball will move opposite to the ball's spin. So instead of getting deflected, the flow separates from the ball.
"Due to this, the net result is the ball pushes the air one way, so the air applies in equal force on the ball the other way, this process is called Magnus effect
