Bharti Airtel signs sponsorship for the 97th Colombo Championship Tennis

Leading telecommunication giant, Bharti Airtel, has signed the sponsorship for the Colombo Championships to be held in 2012. The sponsorship was confirmed on Thursday and it marsk a great milestone for the establishment of tennis as a sport in Sri Lanka.

The tourney which is set to begin on 7th July till the 21st of July for a period of two weeks. Matches on weekdays would be from 3 pm -9 pm and the weekend matches would beging at 8 am to 9 pm and hence speculated to attract a huge crowd on the weekends.

Suren Goonewardene, the Chief Executive Officer of Bharti Airtel, Sri Lanka commented, “The association with SLTA, which has witnesses steady growth in the last few years, is an immense pleasure. It has helped in identifying the finest Sri Lankan Tennis Players. Though only one among the 2 “super” ranking tournaments in Sri Lanka, it would soon grow to international standards. We hope to provide unstinting support to help Tennis to flourish in Sri Lanka”.
Suresh Subramaniam, President of the Sri Lanka Tennis Association, said that this partnership plays a key role in improving the condition of the game in the country. He commented that this tournament was one of the premier tournaments held in the country. He announced that their would be high prizes for the winners and also the participants which would grab the attention of at least a few tennis stars.
The tournament would host Mens and Womens Singles and doubles championships along with games of the same categories for girls and boys. The 96th tournament attracted 650 players from   all over the world and a higher turnover to the games this year is expected.
