Most of us are aware of the colored condoms. But a group of students who took part in the TeenTech awards have dreamt about the new era contraceptive devices which could help detect STIs (Sexually Transmitted Infections) and thus stop spreading those illnesses.
The idea results in S.T. Eye, the ‘new era condom which changes its color when it identifies the STIs. The revolutionary invention is believed to combat soaring infection rates.
The color of the condom will automatically change in the presence of bacteria or viruses that cause common sexually transmitted infections. Depends upon the type of SIT, the color will change. For example: the condom might glow blue for syphilis, purple for human papillomavirus (it causes genital warts), yellow for herpes, and green for Chlamydia explained the designers.
Though it’s just a proof of concept for now, the students expressed their confidence to make it as a reality.
Daanyaal Ali, 14, from Isaac Newton Academy in Illford, who was one of the teammates of the concept, said: 'We created the S.T.EYE as a new way for STI detection to help the future of the next generation.
'We wanted to create something that makes detecting harmful STIs safer than ever before, so that people can take immediate action in the privacy of their own homes without the invasive procedures at the doctors.
'We've made sure we're able to give peace of mind to users and make sure people can be even more responsible than ever before.'
The S.T.EYE was awarded first prize in the Health Category at the final of the TeenTech awards, which are intended to promote science, engineering and technology in schools.
The contest is for groups between 11 to 16 years old. The groups need to come up with technical concepts that make life easier, simpler, and better.
