Illegal organ trade has been on the rise inspite of stringent laws, reason being the huge base of below poverty line existing in our country. There seems to be profound evidence collected from various sources over the flourishing of the traficking of organs. Many brokers, hospitals and doctors have been caught in India. However the selling of kidneys is still on the rise despite all the scandals and rings exposed. The main reason being that demand for the organs globally fuels the supply. The rising international demand for replacement kidneys driven by the increase in diabetes and other diseases. And sadly the poor are exploited and lured with huge amounts which are just triffle of what the middle men get. The worst part is the poor donor is left to himself, with out any assurance for medical help if affected due to the loss at a later stage.
World Health Organisation latest estimates show that organ traffickers are exploiting poor people in China, India and Pakistan to cash in on the rising international demand for replacement kidneys. Experts said a rise in diabetes and other diseases had increased demand for bought and sold organs, leading to a lucrative industry of trafficking.
In 2011 Lok Sabha approved the amended Transplantation of Human Organs (Amendment) Bill which entails stringent punishment for those involved in organ trade.Trading in human organs could soon put one behind bars for as long as 10 years and a fine of up to Rs 1 Cr. This to some extent should curb the illegal trade.
On the other hand the sad reality is that India faces a huge shortage of donated organs. That's because Indians aren't very good when it comes to donating their organs. While Spain has 35.1 organ donors per million people, Britain has 27, USA has around 26, Canada 14 and Australia 11. India's count stands at 0.08 donors per million population.
