The moment we think of snakes the only though that comes to our memories about the poisonous venom and their fearful lengths. Almost all across the nation Snake is dreaded and worshipped too. But this latest research by The John Curtin School of Medical Research, The Australian National University, had found out that toxins that make snake and lizard venom deadly can evolve back into completely harmless molecules, and potentially be developed into drugs.
If that is going to take full shape then since centuries ago our worship to the snake God seems to be answered. As per Australian research if the venom is harnessed, they could become the source of life-saving drugs for cancer, diabetes and high blood pressure.
Persuading the research in these areas should open the doors to a new era of drug technology and more successful formulations are to be discovered. These new drugs could be life saving and unique in its composition. The researchers claim that 'how toxins can be tamed into harmless physiological proteins may aid the development of cures from venom.'
India had the largest number of reported venomous bites, about 80,000 a year with 11,000 deaths. There are about 216 species of snakes in India, of which 52 are known to be venomous. With fast work in harnessing the toxins, the dreaded reptile could be a part of the breeding stocks for the pharma conglomerates. (With inputs from internet-AW AarKay)
