Italian ambassador to India called back

Italian ambassador to India, Giacomo Sanfelice di Monteforte was called by Italy Government for discussions as a charge sheet was filed against two Italian marines for allegedly killing two Indian fishermen near Kerala coast a couple of months ago.

Notably, Kerala police charged two Italian nationals, Latore Massiniliano and Salvator Girone with murder. They forwarded the charge sheet to Chief Judicial Magistrate in Kollam of Kerala.

It may be recalled that two Indian fishermen were mistaken to be pirates and were allegedly shot dead on by Valentine Jalastine and Ajesh Bi on February 15, 2012 on Italian ship  Enrica Lexie.

Italy government told Indian government that the matter be tried in Italian courts instead of Indian courts as the incident took place in international waters.  Meanwhile, Italian deputy foreign minister Staffan De Mistura has termed the incident as an accident.
