Imagine what would have happened if data storage was not there. Then we would have, millions of papers of recorded data, for future references. Obviously someone would have come out with a solution, but due credit must be given to the first company which forayed in this field, decades ago. IBM introduces the first ever disk storage RAMAC 305 to the information technology industry. Truly that has taken multiple avatars in the last five decades, however the pioneer need be commended.
The American conglomerate, International Business machines Corporation (IBM) has pioneered in infrastructure, hosting and consulting services in areas ranging from mainframe to nanotechnology. And on September 13, 1956, introduced the first disk storage RAMAC 305. This phenomenally led to the various variants used by us today. From the hard disk drives (HDD) to removable disk drives like floppy disks. The revolution was unending with CD, DVD and now the blu-rays. And the innovation cycle is endless.
Some interesting specs for the IBM 305 RAMAC (Random Access Method of Accounting and Control), looks funny today but then was awesome. It was the first super computer with a HDD and the last vacuum one built by IBM. Weighing over a ton had to be fork-lifted to place it in its slot. It could store of 5MB data. Oh great, from here where we have reached and where we are traveling, at top speeds, is phenomenal, say our science friends. (With inputs from internet-AW AarKay)
