Taliban use Facebook for new recruits

Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan has been running a page on Facebook which has a little under 300 likes on the page. It has recently posted job opportunities for the interested writers, video editing and translation.

The page, Umar Media TTP page has recently posted a message while asking for aspirants who could write for "Ahyah-e-Khilafat", a magazine hailed to be the official quarterly magazine for the TTP.

Motivating people to take up their job, the text on the post reads, "Dear brothers and sisters, 'Pen is mightier than the sowrd (sic)'. Now you have a chance to use this mighty weapon”.

A selected writer has the opportunity to cover a topic of any choice or jihadi current affairs, history, Islamic movements, plight of ummah, among others.

Introducing the opportunities to come soon to the people’s doorstep, they posted a message in October announcing the opportunities.

The job description required a candidate to work on “video editing, translations, sharing, uploading, downloading and collection of required data".

It was speculated by a US private secret intelligence organization, SITE, that the Taliban may have been using Facebook for recruitment.

The TTP is notorious for its involvement in several iterations of bombings, suicide attacks killing several thousands in the past five years. Only recently they tried to kill the teenage activist for going against their sayings, Malala Yousufzai.
