WhatsApp to Put Indian Digital Banking at Risk:- Banking experts warned that the payment feature of Facebook owned WhatsApp in digital banking system will be at risk after WhatsApp accounts of 121 Indians were compromised by Pegasus, an Israeli spyware. "WhatsApp payment needs to be seen with microscopic eye, primarily because in payment you will be dealing with sensitive personal data and cyber security is going to be an essential building block component for WhatsApp to demonstrate its due diligence," told Pavan Duggal, an expert in cyber law.
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (Meity) is already unhappy with WhatsApp over the compromised accounts. Pegasus is said to have exploited the video calling system of WhatsApp after it installed a spyware to snoop 1400 users across the globe. WhatsApp this year asked its users to update the app after discovering vulnerability. WhatsApp will now have to exercise due to diligence under the law. WhatsApp didn't follow reasonable security practices as mandated in Section 43A of the IT Act, 2000. Now this can put Indian digital market at risk.
