Now boil water without bubbles

A research team, with one scientist of Indian-origin has developed a novel type of surface that would prevent the water from bubbling even after it reaches the boiling point.

Researchers from the Northwestern's McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science in US, King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, Saudi Arabia and the University of Melbourne have worked actively in developing the special surface. This method of boiling water would prevent damage to the surface of the boiling containers which is a great loss in the industries, ships, heat transfers. It could also be used in preventing explosions which are caused by the bubbling. The applications may someday find their wat to enhance heat transfer equipment, reduce drag on ships and lead to anti-frost technologies.

The technology was not entirely new but a novel way of applying what was known from textures and chemistry. "We manipulated what has been known for a long, long time by using the right kind of texture and chemistry to prevent bubbling during boiling," Neelesh A Patankar, co-author of the study, said.

The surface had been specifically engineered after coating it enabling the stable vapor cushion to be formed between surface and a hot liquid thereby eliminating the bubbles created during boiling.
